The Denison Homestead is beginning to undergo a series of renovations, both inside and outside. This will be long-term and will require significant financial resources but the renovations are required for the Homestead to remain a sound structure. Thankfully, we completed Phase 1 in November of 2006. This required re-shingling the back roof of the Main house and the ell, make the necessary repairs to the dormers, and tie the ends of the attic walls together to stop them from causing further bowing of the exterior walls. The work was done by Gene Anderson III and Gil Bliss and was made possible in part by the wonderful donations sent during the Shingle Sale and Building Restoration Fund, which amounted to approximately $23,000. The total cost was around $31,000. The results are something to be really proud, of as the pictures below illustrate. (Click on a thumbnail to see a larger picture.
Plans for Phases 2 and 3 are on hold as we sort out funding alternatives. These two phases will consist of taking up the floor boards in the main rooms of the Homestead and repairing the places where the joists are separating from the beams. The need for this repair was discovered in the West Chamber during the Structural Engineer's survey conducted in the spring of 2006. At this time, we are researching many ways to find the financial resources to pay for the necessary restoration. We'll be updating this page frequently, so please come back soon (and don't forget to hit Refresh or Update on your browser to see the changes).
